“Duncans Landing” oil on panel, 8×10
Thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth in Bodega. It was great meeting so many nice folks. In talking about my paintings I realized I hadn’t shared one of the paintings from my trip to Bodega Bay. I started this painting because I liked the strip of fog off in the distance (not to mention the colors of the ice plant and water). So I took my time getting the right spot and mixing up some colors, and the minute I started painting, the fog moved in and suddenly everything was shades of gray. Painters are always talking about getting the values right, which means representing the relative lightness or darkness of the colors correctly. So I went ahead and painted the values I saw, using the colors I’d already mixed, and it worked!

Duncans Landing in the fog

This is what I saw by the time I stopped painting.

Painting at sunset

“Hay Field” 5×7″, oil on panel, $75

After I finished this painting, “Sunset at Crane Ranch”, I turned 90 degrees and saw an amazing sunset in progress. I had enough paint on my palette left over that I whipped out a little panel and painted stack of hay bales across the street. Usually I take the time to do a little sketch and think about composition, but I didn’t really have time for that with this painting. It was just so much fun to paint with such vivid orange and purples.

I’m all packed up now for the show at Bodega this weekend. I was looking over the list of bands and wineries participating, and I’m sorry I’ll be sitting the booth the whole time. It looks like it’s going to be fun!

Getting ready

“Sunset at Crane Ranch”, oil on panel, 8×10

I spent much of yesterday and today framing and cataloging new work to take to the Bodega Art, Wine and Seafood festival this weekend. Wow, I’ve got a lot of new paintings.

Upward Path

“Upward Path”, oil on panel, 11×14, $425

Sometimes it works to plan ahead. I had the idea for this painting from a previous trip to Mt. Burdell, and got up way too early in the morning to be at this location just as the sun was rising. I waited impatiently for the fog to clear, and was rewarded with some lovely shadows and a painting I’m very pleased with.

Rolling Hills

“Rolling Hills” oil on panel, 8×10, $320

I’ve painted at Mt. Burdell Open Space plenty of times, but the other day I found a different entrance to the park, and so a whole new set of vistas for me to paint. I did a set of 5 paintings pretty much from the same spot over the course of two days. This one is looking out towards Sears Point across the Petaluma river.

Ice Plant

“Ice Plant” oil on panel, 8×10, $320

This was the first painting of the trip to Bodega Bay. It’s the view from our campsite across the bay. In fact I stood in the shelter of the van for some shade and protection from the wind while I painted. There’s always the question of when to stop working on a painting, and I think this one I quit a little too soon. The ice plant in the foreground is still a bit indistinct and maybe a little too painterly. But I’m very happy with the color combination, so I thought I’d share it.

Bodega Reflections

“Bodega Reflections” oil on panel, 8×10, SOLD

I think this is my favorite painting from our trip to Bodega Bay. The theme of the trip was “coping with changing conditions” and this painting was no exception. Just as I started working on this one the wind that had been creating these beautiful ripples in the water disappeared, and the seagull that had been calming sitting on the piling flew off. Lucky for me, I’d put in those reflected shapes first, but the seagull was a lost cause.

Red Number 8

“Red Number 8″, oil on panel, 8×10, $320

Here’s another from Bodega Bay. When I got home the water looked improbably blue, so I checked a reference photo I snapped of the scene, and my camera seems to agree with me. Must have been sunny at the coast! Speaking of the Sonoma coast, I have another show coming up. The Bodega Seafood, Art and Wine festival is a little more than a week away, August 23-24. Drop on by if you’re in the area and enjoy some great food and music.

Bodega Bay Fog

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

“Beach Grass and Fog” oil on panel, 5×7

One of the difficulties I had painting at the coast was how quickly the fog would move in (or clear up) and completely change the view. By the time I finished this painting, I couldn’t see the other side of the bay. This one is pretty much the view from our second campsite on the bay side of Doran Beach.
